Waterproofing admixtures for concrete: why they matter

In new concrete structures, from house foundations to pools and tanks, waterproofing determines durability and safety. Surface treatments often work only for a limited time, especially under constant water exposure or aggressive substances. That is why solutions that work inside the concrete, such as VANDEX AM 10, are increasingly chosen.

What is VANDEX AM 10?

It is a dry powder concrete admixture. Its active chemicals react with moisture and free lime in the concrete pores and form insoluble crystals inside the concrete. These crystals block pores and micro-cracks, while the concrete stays vapour-permeable, so it keeps "breathing" and vapour does not build up inside.

Why choose a waterproofing admixture?

Unlike surface solutions (brush-on coatings, self-adhesive or torch-on membranes), the admixture becomes part of the concrete itself. Even if the surface wears or is damaged, protection stays active inside the concrete. It is also mixed in during production, which reduces the risk of application errors and gives uniform results across the whole structure.

• Water permeability (EN 12390-8): concrete cubes with 1% admixture showed no water penetration at 5 bar.
• CRD C48-92: in a 14-day test at 13.8 bar, water permeability dropped by more than 70%.
• Chemical resistance: 33% higher sulfate resistance and 10% lower chloride penetration.
• Mechanical properties: up to 8% higher compressive strength and a 93.8% durability factor after 300 freeze-thaw cycles.

Simple to use

The admixture is supplied as a dry powder that is easy to mix in during concrete production. The usual dosage is 1-2% of the cement weight.

Solution example: foundation and basement

One possible solution uses concrete with VANDEX AM 10 (about 1% of cement weight), a Drenfol drainage membrane, a construction joint between concrete pours sealed with the crystalline waterproofing VANDEX Super (about 1 kg/m²) and an expanding bentonite waterstop SOLOBAR BENTO (or alternatively the polymer swelling strip SOLOBAR POLY).
